Walter W. Kimmel, Sr., 101, of Columbus, Nebraska, went to his “real home” in Heaven on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Brookestone Acres in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 12:00 PM in the chapel of Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Baltimore with Pastor Andrew Okai officiating,  Interment will immediately follow. Memorials may be directed to the Augsburg Lutheran Home, 6811 Campfield Road, Baltimore, MD 21207.

Walter was born July 22nd, 1915, in Washington, D.C. to Alois and Rosa (Wievard) Kimmel. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baltimore. Walt graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Walter met the love of his life, Lisette Hasenzahl, at Immanuel Lutheran Church where they served God together in several different ways. On August 18th, 1940, the couple were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Walter entered the United States Navy on October 2nd, 1943, and served overseas during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 26th, 1945. Walter returned home resumed work at Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, retiring in 1980 as a Municipal Street Lighting Engineer. Both Walter and Lisette were active in Christian education at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Walter directing the choir and Lisette played the organ. They also both sang in the choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Columbus, Nebraska, last October to be near family. Walter and Lisette just celebrated their 76 wedding anniversary.

Walter enjoyed gardening, growing an array of daylilies and azaleas. He was also good with a hammer and saw, and loved music. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus.

Grandchildren – Michael Kimmel of Robbinsdale, MN; David (Yoko) Kimmel of Fort Collins, CO; Elliott (Cerianne) Kimmel of Thousand Oaks, CA; and Charlotte Kimmel of Boston, MA
Great-Grandchildren – Logan, Henry, and Genevieve Kimmel of MN; and Kai Kimmel of CO
Sister – Charlotte Wilkins of Levittown, PA

Walter was preceded in death by:
Parents – Alois and Rosa Kimmel
Infant Brother
