Mary Dolores Boland Wesley, a resident of Charlestown Senior Living Community died on July 12, 2021 at the age of 91. Born in Washington, D.C. on April 5, 1930 and raised in Southeast, the daughter of John E. and Veronica B. Boland, Mary (affectionately known by family as Dolores) attended St. Peter’s Catholic grade school on Capitol Hill and graduated from St. Cecilia’s Academy. She began working at Kresge’s as a teenager. Her work ethic continued with a career of over 40 years at the National Geographic Society.
Upon retiring in 1992 she continued to live in Rockville, MD close to long time friends. Dolores enjoyed traveling, and her hobby of collecting unique memorabilia filled her home. She was an accomplished duckpin bowler competing in leagues and championships. A devoted sports fan, Dolores followed both college and pro football with loyalty to the Washington Football Team, Navy and Notre Dame. She spent many a cold Sunday at RFK stadium. Dolores was a voracious reader, and her taste in music spanned many genres, jazz being her favorite. Dolores was particularly proud of her Irish heritage, evident in her wry humor, and ability to speak her mind.
In 2009, Dolores moved to Charlestown where her sister-in-law, Gloria Boland resided. She participated in activities of interest, was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Community, and enjoyed more time with extended family.
Dolores married William (Bill) H. Wesley in 1954 and was widowed in 1971. She was pre-deceased by her four siblings. Survivors include her sisters-in-law Gloria (Baltimore) and Flo Boland (Long Boat Key, FL), many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Chapel at Charlestown on July 19th at 11:00 a.m with a family gathering from 10:30am-11:00am prior. A private burial will be held at the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Silver Spring.
