McKenna, Sr., John I.
On September 22, 2016 at age 85. Beloved husband of Madalen G. (Grace) for over 64 years. He is survived by his children, Jeannette List and her husband Bill, John and his wife, Donna (Pickett), Madalen O’Connell Kight and her husband, Bob, Patrick and his wife Kaycee (Murray), Kevin and his fiancé Jody Councilman.
Grandfather of 10: Patrick List married to Lauren (Saul), Bridget List Shadler married to Tim Shadler, Jason O’Connell, Ryan McKenna (who preceded him in death and welcomed him into heaven), Daniel List, Megan McKenna, Sheila List, Matthew McKenna, Colleen McKenna and Tim McKenna.
Great Grandfather of 6: Tim and Kenny Nevins, Clyde and Madalyn Shadler, Lux McKenna and Ethan List.
John attended St. Joseph Monastery Elementary School, and was a proud graduate of Mt. St. Joseph, class of 1948. He was a member of the Alumni Board for 42 years. He worked for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, the Maryland State Health Department and the Maryland State Department of Juvenile Services. He also worked other jobs as needed to support his family. He was a member of the United States Air Force and served in Korea.
He earned a B.S. in Political Science from Loyola College, a J.D. from the University of Baltimore, and an Executive Masters’ of Business Administration from Loyola College.
He coached baseball and basketball and was a volunteer for the CYO basketball program. He started the basketball program at St. Clement, Lansdowne and ran it for over 40 years.
John was a member of the VFW, the Holy Name Society, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Rooks, the knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
John was also a Deacon of the Roman Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and served at St. Clement parish where he was a long time parishioner. He taught religious education classes, worked with SHARE and volunteered in many other areas of the parish.
John was very proud of his Irish heritage, devoted to his Catholic faith, his family and his friends.
A lifelong love of Mount St. Joe led to 42 years on the alumni board there, volunteering for many other positions and winning various awards given by the school.
John and his wife, Madalen, enjoyed traveling.
