Harsey L. Shutt III, age 69 of Baltimore, MD, died peacefully on December 25, 2016 at his home surrounded by the love of his family, after a valiant battle with cancer. Harsey was the beloved husband of Lois Shutt (Sheppard), loving father of Amy (Shutt) Melchin, Meghann Shutt, Joanna Shutt and Katie (Shutt) Holl and sons-in-law Paul Melchin and Ben Holl. Harsey's grandchildren, Lucy, Iris and Lila lit up his world. He was a loyal brother to Alice March, Kathy Schatz, Joan Hargadon, Michael Shutt, Martin Shutt and the late Karen Blair and Patrick Shutt. He is survived by dozens of loving brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, lifelong friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Harsey was born in Baltimore on December 14, 1947 to the late Margaret and Harsey Shutt Jr., the second of eight children. He attended Mt. St. Joseph High School where he enthusiastically played football; he maintained a lifelong appreciation for his alma mater and the Catholic community at the school. He was a proud US Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War. After returning from his military service he married the love of his life, Lois, whom he met at their grade school, St. Benedict's. Together Harsey and Lois built their beautiful family in Baltimore, raising four daughters. Harsey often remarked that he was "the luckiest man in the world," as he was surrounded by women in his loud, loving home. Later he found the friendship of his beloved dog buddies (deceased), Sam, Leo and Willie, who are likely leaping with excitement at his arrival.

For years, Harsey owned and operated a Pepperidge Farm bread route business. Harsey went on to purchase a driving school in the 1990s and spent almost two decades expertly teaching teenagers across Baltimore how to drive. After his retirement, he enjoyed chauffeuring for a car business and meeting people from all over the world during his travels - he shared that this last one was his favorite job he had ever had, noting how much he loved sharing stories with others.

Harsey was known as a loving and loyal friend and family member. His home was always open and welcoming to people of all stripes and he truly cherished the revolving door of characters who passed in and out. He will be remembered fondly for his steadfast character, his inherent and deep kindness and his unique blend of gruff, loving quirk.

Family and friends will honor his life at Ambrose Funeral Home, 1328 Sulphur Spring Rd, 21227, with a public viewing on Thursday, 12/29/16 from 3-5 p.m. & 7-9 p.m.  A funeral mass will be held on Friday, 12/30/16 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, 4414 Wilkens Ave, 21229. Donations in Harsey’s memory can be made to Luke's Wings at www.lukeswings.org or the Air Force Aid Society at www.afas.org.
