Dennis Plitt

March 30, 1950 — January 5, 2018

On January 5, 2018, Dennis Bryan Plitt, 67, died at his home in Ellicott City, Maryland. Dennis was proud to call Maryland home his entire life: He was born at Bon Secours hospital in Baltimore on March 30, 1950, the younger of twin boys. He grew up in Arbutus (where he met his wife, Rose), and attended Ascension School, Cardinal Gibbons High School, and Loyola University. For more than 40 years, he worked for the Social Security Administration: He started as a claims authorizer in 1973, and received many commendations throughout his career. He retired in 2015 as the Division Director in the Office of Appellate Operations in SSA’s Baltimore office.

Dennis’s death was unexpected, but the Plitt family takes great comfort in the many wonderful memories they have of him, whether it was summer vacations in Ocean City (soundtracked by Motown and the Beach Boys); road trips to Daytona, Florida, for Nascar races; or daylong excursions to museums and bookstores in Washington, D.C. (the Air and Space Museum was his favorite).

His biggest passions in life—cars, history, and books—were matched only by the love he had for his family, particularly his wife, Rose, and his beloved children, Laura and Amy. Dennis was the beloved son of Catherine Plitt and the late Emory A. Plitt Sr., and will be remembered fondly by many, including his brothers, Emory A. Plitt Jr. and Michael B. Plitt Sr.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Rose Holmes; his sisters-in-law, Judy Plitt and Patricia Acree; his brother-in-law, Gordon Holmes; his sons-in-law, Andrew Fickinger and Jon Gerlach; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitations will take place at Ambrose Funeral Home at 1328 Sulphur Spring Road in Arbutus, Maryland, on Wednesday, January 10 (3-5 p.m., 7-9 p.m.), and Thursday, January 11 (3-5 p.m.). A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ambrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Viva House (26 South Mount St, Baltimore, MD 21223) in Baltimore, Maryland.
