Curtis L. Hayes – affectionately know to his teen friends as “Rebel” but to most other people throughout his life as Larry – passed away peacefully on January 17, 2021 at Seasons Hospice at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. A native of Lillington, North Carolina, Mr. Hayes proudly served his country for eight years in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Hayes spent most of his professional life in the construction field, working as a carpenter/foreman for Southern Engineers; a Senior Project Manager for the Rouse Company; a Chief of Construction for the City of Baltimore; and finally as the yard manager for American Platform Scaffolding. Mr. Hayes also worked weekends and evenings for nearly two decades in the glass and mirror business; volunteered his time and talents at Brantly Baptist Church and at Camp WoMeTo; and helped his oldest son Tony launch a successful home improvement business.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Julian Hayes and Callie McLean Hayes; by his sisters Nancy Jean Moore and Shirley Thomas; and by two younger brothers (Chester and “Baby” Hayes) who died in infancy. Survivors include his petite wife, Anna R. Hayes; sons Anthony C. Hayes of Baltimore and Julian Chester Hayes (Mary) of Florence, SC; daughter Callie Ann Pugh (Dennis) of Canyon Lake, TX; and step-daughters Sylvie Boender of Ellicott City, MD and Beatrice Pelletier (Yves) of Mornant, France. Larry is also survived by grandchildren Lori-Marie, Jonathan, Kelsey, Yann and Isabelle, plus 12 great-grandchildren on two continents (with number 13 on the way!) Larry also leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends, including John A. “Jack” Boender and Lisa Salkov.
