Charles Soos

May 27, 1957 — October 7, 2017

On October 7, 2017, Charles Soos, beloved brother of Nellie Horvath and John Soos; loving uncle of Kristina Horvath; devoted son of the late Joseph and Rozalia Soos; former husband to Jolanta Soos Rosemeier, passed suddenly.

Charles Soos (Charlie) was born on May 27, 1957 in Brežice, Slovenia, which was then part of Yugoslavia, to Hungarian refugees Joseph and Rozalia Soos, who crossed the Hungarian-Yugoslav border in February, 1957 to escape the crackdown that followed the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1956. They spent 10 months in refugee camps, and Charlie was born in a hospital near one of those camps. The three of them came to the United States in November, 1957 and settled in Arbutus, Maryland. In 1970, all three became naturalized U.S. citizens.

Charlie attended Maiden Choice Elementary, Arbutus Elementary, Arbutus Junior High, and Lansdowne Senior High School. He later earned his B.A. from the University of Baltimore. When he was nineteen, Charlie established his own painting/contracting business, which he was operating up to the time of his death. He excelled as a painter and knew his trade well.

Charlie was well-traveled, having visited all fifty states and a number of countries around the world. He enjoyed political and philosophical discussions with friends and family members. He was fluent in Hungarian and kept in constant touch with relatives in Hungary, many of whom came to the United States to visit him.

Charlie loved music and played guitar on his many custom-made instruments. He was also a very gregarious person with many friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good joke. Because he had a big heart, he affected many people’s lives positively by giving them employment opportunities and a place to stay.

He loved his family, and the recent deaths of his parents affected him deeply. He will be sorely missed by his sister, brother, niece, many friends, as well as his numerous relatives in Hungary. He passed away far too soon.
