Carol O. Hamilton, beloved daughter of the late Gordon and Lily Hamilton, passed away on July 18, 2024 following a long and full life. She is survived by her sister Nancy Raynor, children, Elizabeth Doherty, James H. Doherty, Sean M. Doherty, daughter-in-law Jennifer A. Doherty, grandchildren Keri Kingland, Stephanie Frederick, Emma Doherty, Evan Doherty and Michael Doherty and great-granddaughter Allison Kingland. Carol was born November 7, 1937 and raised in New York City, NY. She studied at Bates College and Cornell University where she obtained her degree in Nursing. She worked briefly with the NYC Department of Public Health before joining the Navy where she reached the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and served until she had her first child. She was one of the first nurses hired for Howard County General Hospital in labor and delivery and worked there for over 30 years until her retirement from the hospital. A dedicated nurse, she cared deeply about women's health in general and maternal fetal health specifically. She was a strong woman, loving mother and doting grandmother. She had many joys she loved to share with family and friends. An avid knitter, she always had something on the needles, with many receiving the fruits of her labors in the form of sweaters, shawls, hats and more. A remarkable baker, she was renowned among her friends and family for the marathon cookie baking sessions she held with friends at Christmas time. The dozen plus types of cookies produced in these sessions were shared far and wide as delicious gifts. One of the places she loved most was vacationing in Maine with her oldest friend Roberta. She loved sharing the beauty of Maine with her friends and family and at one time had hoped to retire there. Her presence in their lives will be missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Grace United Church of Christ, 1000 S Rolling Road Catonsville, MD 21228, on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon reception for family and friends to visit and share memories.
